We work w, & on behalf of many families who have lost loved ones to suicide.
I’ve shared openly that what sent me to the hospital in 2017 was an ideation. I wont get too graphic but it was abt pills & felt like a magnetic pull towards self harm that I couldn’t stop. It was as if the ideation was on a record player - over & over again, w no end, telling me what to do. This wasn’t me “choosing” anything. This was my biology trying to speak up.
Fortunately I had the wherewithal to ask for help & get to the hospital at a time when being on my own wouldn’t have been safe. That wasn’t a weakness. I didn’t want that reality. On the contrary - I was fighting the thought that felt so powerful, that I needed help to defeat it.
Sadly, for too many, the pull of the thought is so strong - the brain feels broken. It’s an error msg like computers get error msgs, & the stronger we try to fight it, the stronger the thought gets.
There’s this misconception that suicide is a rational choice. That’s why, companies/brands/now social media pages, have traditionally used images of attempting suicide as a joke - “things are so bad that I may as well choose to do this___ to get out of this scenario.” And it’s often done tongue & cheek: Our team’sbplaying so bad, it’s the only way out. My work boss is so awful I gotta “end it.”
This wknd a large fan page (140k followers) posted a “joke” abt a mascot attempting suicide in numerous ways - ways many of us are sadly familiar w, as a way to show what fans “feel like doing.”
It’s not worth relitigating it. You can check out the account in Stories. But many of you stepped up to write the page/ask them to take it down/explained rationally why their post was a poor choice.
Ultimately they added a warning & resources. The “reach” of their post was too impt for them to take it down/do the right thing. But…so many of you stepped up to write them & band together.
Let’s share & educate & help explain what needs to change! These examples can’t continue even if a joke - they are way too strong of a reminder.

No music, no playing the algo “game.” Just straight to it - our own biology is being used again us by media outlets, content creators & others to divide us. Here are some of the someone explanations as to why and how, and how we can get out of this pattern as a society. There’s a lot more gray than we can see when we first view a message, out there…

Loved his opinions and takes, or hated them…
Were a fan of his opinions and how he tried to pursued others or not…
Why are we so far from where we were with 9/11 - where there was a clear line between good and evil?
Sh00ting someone - Charlie Kirk in this case…or school kids, or embassy workers or govt officials - ANYONE who tries to kill someone else on ANY fabricated “side” - it’s evil.
There is only one true “side” that there is an actual line for: the evil side…and it’s a line of good vs that evil.
Can we unite and talk down violence of any kind - whether we agree with a person’s stances or not?
Our mental health, and our nation/world depends on it.

Something we’ve been thinking about for a while - will take a lot of work, but this is the year we gotta make it happen.
The 988 line📞 - call & text - provides such an important service: a place for folks to reach out to, to speak or text with someone while they are in crisis.
However, when people need to feel comfort & support - especially in today’s world where everything is on-demand, they also need options.
Need comfort & want a movie you can get lost in? There are places like Netflix and Hulu🎥.
Need comfort & want music that can feel like a hug? There are places like Spotify & Pandora🎸.
Need comfort & want a book you can cozy up to dive into the storyline? There are places like The Kindle Store and Open Library📚.
Why, when so many advocates are willing to open up about their battles with suicidal ideation 🙋🏻♂️🙋♀️🙋🏾♀️& even attempts, do we not have a database of comforting videos showing a diverse set of people who can comfort those who are struggling IN the moment, with words of encouragement: “I’ve been where you’re at. You’re gonna make it through this. This is just temporary. The world needs you safe and your story is going to help so many others. Let’s do this exercise together to help you feel grounded. And there are dozens of other friends of mine on here you can listen to. We are all here to support you.”
I feel fortunate to have met such advocates over the years who’d be willing to share their stories: athletes, scientists, accountants, teachers, students, parents, Black, White, Latino, Asian, urban, rural, who’ve struggled w all different kinds of life challenges - we can give people others who they can relate to, in a moment of crisis.
If you’d want to be a part of the project by sharing your story, let us know in comments, or send us a DM. The world needs this.

Was away this weekend with a practitioner doing work on events/experiences/relationships/interactions that don’t serve me to “hold on to” any longer. We all hold on to these deep down, but often don’t realize it/don’t know how to purge their impact from our bodies.
Healing is messy…if you want to learn more about my myofascial release, or other modalities I did this weekend so you can keep “spiraling” up on your healing journey in a good way, to continue on your path, let me know in comments & we can DM about it. Happy to share the experience & point out some practices that may be able to help you get to that next “level” of healing for you. Also, share any messy experiences you’ve had that have helped you heal so that others can learn 👇.

When I got into the MH space, 2 questions kept coming up: 1) Are you gonna talk abt head injuries, aren’t those separate from MH? 2) What abt suicides? That’s a diff level & one you don’t want to touch bc it’s so intense & doesn’t affect as many as MH, generally.
My answer to both was: Why would I focus on global MH & NOT focus on two major parts of the topic that absolutely are all tied together? Is TBI not a contributing factor to one’s MH just like life traumas, environment, lifestyle, etc? Is suicide not a later state place on the SAME MH continuum we ALL live on, & are ALL susceptible to?
Separating these things out from the convo didn’t make sense to me.
As my buddy Theo Fleury says: these things are all “cousins living in the same house.”
So why bring this up now, in Suicide Awareness Month? The answer is bc of the reactions of 2 recent posts I shared.
1) Our last past was abt how the topic of suicide needs to be normalized. That it’s not a “binary” one. That there aren’t people who “develop the disease of suicide” vs those who “don’t.” But instead, we all live on a MH continuum, & when overwhelm hits our nervous system for too long, suicidal ideations that are extremely hard to fight - & can happen to any of us.
2) But then the post right before was abt the awful shoot!ng in Minnesota, & the need to address BOTH the gun convo AND the MH convo, bc ppl who sh00t up kids are not of sound mind/MH def plays in.
A few of the reactions to that post, in comments, from ppl who are staunch MH advocates - defending that “this is not a MH convo & making it one ‘stigmatizes the mentally ill’” made me realize just how long we still have to go, to not only normalize that suicide isn’t binary, but that MH isn’t either.
I get it that the talk of suicide’s scary. It’s the end of an awful health battle that may’ve been waged silently. So for folks to see it as binary (those who have “it” vs those who don’t) makes sense.
But MH IS HEALTH. And yet we have advocates & the largest MH orgs still defending this “separate” category - “the mentally ill” - as if we aren’t all susceptible to it. Inclusive messaging is needed to “break stigma”…not separate categorization.
Sept. begins National Suicide Prevention Month. I did a program yesterday at Ticonderoga School District on behalf of a fam that’s become fam to me, the Morrisons, who lost their son, Jack, to suicide ~5yrs ago.
If you’re like me, you’re fed up w the fact that on a mass scale, this topic gets discussed in the SAME way it’s been discussed for decades, & the trends all go in the WRONG direction. It happened yet AGAIN this yr.
In Sept. of 2024, I posted similar slides that suicides were the highest ever on record - for the full yr 2023.
Well, sadly, as I write this: In 2024, the suicide rate is estimated to have risen again to arnd 14.7 per 100,000—still climbing after 2023’s record high of 14.2.
So many issues w how “it” is even discussed, still today:
- When we lose someone this way: schools/colleges/institutions/offices talk abt the “tragic loss” & give the date range that someone lived. They don’t even MENTION the term suicide - which furthers the shame cycle & hurts the normalization of help seeking.
- When these groups are even willing to discuss suicide in a proactive way, thru assemblies/town halls/emails - they talk abt what to look out for in OTHERS: “giving away possessions, having a formal plan, eating/sleeping more or less.”
- Much like “Just Say No” campaigns, there’s no discussion of how this topic applies to ALL of us. W/ drugs we didn’t learn that they were tools to escape emotional pain - pain we ALL feel at times, & use these drugs or other maladaptive coping techniques to escape. Similarly, w suicide - there’s a loss in a community & training goes RIGHT to the suicide loss itself, & not how chronic stress & trauma (the building blocks that lead TO ideations), build in all of us.
15 mill in the US last yr reported suicidal ideations. It’s time we normalized talking abt suicide in a preventative way in the FIRST person. All month we’ll share the LIFE Saver (last slide➡️) that does just that. Please be a part of changing this to a proactive model - help us share & normalize & save lives.

While in Mexico, I shared that I’d sent my pal in this space, @kevinhinesstory some pics, after he asked if I was in NY to meet up. Unsolicited, he took those pics & made a post on LinkedIn that was so nice, about the advocacy work I’m doing in other countries. He didn’t need to do that. He’s got his own big platform. He did it bc he gets the big pic - that no one person saves the world…we have to be a team.
Listen, everyone who shares openly about their experience wants to help as many as they can. They want to go “wide”…so that a brand & core msg they are building can make more impact. Some do it bc it brings money. Some do it bc they are mission driven & have been in so much pain, they want to help. I like those who lead w the latter.
The five gentlemen I shared in these slides - they have varying degrees as far as sizes of platforms - but they have something in common: they all care, have a big heart, don’t want to see others suffer like they did, & are genuine.
Especially w men, which is why I started this type of post (will do other posts on other groups), it’s rare to find ones who are truly vulnerable. You’ll find “influencers” willing to share stories, but often it’s to build their platform, and not as the primary driver - to help others w radical openness.
These five people here - I follow all of them & root them on. I told Kevin on his post, it’s like having an Avengers groups from Marvel, & everyone is going out on the road, doing their thing, & trying to help the world…individually but ALSO as a team.
Check out each of these accounts: @theofleury14 @justinbrien19 @theryanphillipsofficial @boydmelson - from sexual abuse to abuse in locker rooms, from loss of loved ones to caring for sick family members…it’s an incredible group of guys - an Avengers group that fills my cup when I check in, read their posts, & see the work they are doing.
And no, it’s not a “top 5” list. It’s just 5 I’m starting w & will share more in future posts.

Complex problem - one that hasn’t been solved by one-sided posts/rants from politicians or influencers in decades.
If you’re as tired as I am/we are, of seeing these tragedies continue to happen, maybe it’s time we held leaders accountable for common sense compromise. Hope these stats help paint a broader picture. Happy to provide sources to those who ask via DM (Too long to write out all of them here.)
If you have other ideas - other than a one sided approach, or you agree we need compromise to make change happen, please share⬇️.

Those who’ve been following along know that our SameHere Global team is out in Mexico City - meeting w govt leaders on the local, state, & federal levels, as well as large Mexican tech businesses - to help share our proactive mental health solutions more widely arnd the globe/outside the US.
As it relates to this story, our top piece of our technology, our app: SameHere Scale, as well as those techs we’re partnering with, all use AI in some form. This post is NOT meant to knock AI, generally. Let me give an example:
While we have STARR (stress & trauma active release & rewiring) exercises or a “gym for the brain” w MH exercise options already in the app, AI that we’re incorporating w tech partners will enable us to show users their trends, & make recommendations as to the best exercises that work for them. AI bots can be like personal trainers taking users thru the “brain gym.”
That’s harnessing the power of AI to HELP people.
Bc of the travel, I wasn’t going to post this wk, but this story had me boiling. AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, & others need to have safeguards related to mental health & suicld@lity put into place - NOW.
These AI tools aggregate posts & data from all over the web. Think of the web as a library of books you can take out. AI is a way to get a summary of what’s in all the books, collectively, in the click of a button. Bold font for this: THERE IS NO REASON THAT SUPPORT OF SUIClD€ NOR MEANS TOWARDS SUIClD€, AGGREGATED, SHOULD EVER BE SHARED BY ANY OF THESE AI TOOLS. EVER.
There is no legit reason that can be given for why this info shouldn’t be deleted from any data that can be pulled up by these tools when users search.
When someone’s having ideations - they need HOPE, not a push to follow an impulsive error msg they’re having. We have to hold these companies to higher standards.
Also, terrible headline by the NY Post here - to put the “means” discussed in it is awful. Media companies need to be held accountable too.
