With the #SameHere Scale, we have worked with school professionals, graphic designers, world-renowned psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, and social workers (as well as focus groups of students and parents) to create an easy-to-understand (mental health continuum, or) \u201cscale\u201d that puts everyone in the school community on the same page with respect to a non-diagnostic common language that can be used to express how our mental health may change over time. There are some of us with a greater genetic susceptibility to nervous system dysregulation (becoming \u201cinflexible\u201d and staying further to the right on the Scale with greater \u201csympathetic\u201d nervous system activation) and ultimately symptoms that are referred to by many as disorder(s). That being said, it appears as though regardless of our genetics, the challenges that we will all face throughout our lives, as well as how we treat ourselves, make it so that we are all at risk of slipping into the: \u201cFluctuating\u201d and \u201cStruggling\u201d portions of the Scale for weeks or more.\u00a0 And, if we don\u2019t take care of ourselves and we become \u201cinflexible,\u201d there may be too high of a sympathetic response for too long, and we are susceptible to falling into a \u201cfreeze\u201d state of our nervous system that we call \u201cSinking\u201d on this Scale.\u00a0 Think of this as too many programs open on your computer at once, and it \u201cfreezing\u201d because it is becoming overwhelmed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Our mental health is therefore cumulative (just like physical health and plaque building in our arteries), and we can monitor how that \u201csympathetic nervous system response\u201d builds over time, with this Scale, how we become inflexible, and how that even leads to that \u201cSinking\u201d spot. The key is to understand that any of the above factors can manifest all the way to \u201cdysregulation\u201d and \u201cinflexibility,\u201d and that we must know what thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (like you see in the chart above) to look out for throughout our lives.\u00a0 We must even be proactive so there is less of a chance for us to develop mental health complications when we stay \u201cto the right\u201d on this Scale for long periods of time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

The Practitioners and Members of #SameHere\u2019s Global Alliance champion the reality \u2013 that mental health is not binary.\u00a0 There is no \u201chealthy\u201d group of the population, vs a \u201csick group with disorders.\u201d\u00a0 Instead, everyone\u2019s mental health lives on a \u201ccontinuum,\u201d or in simpler words, a \u201cScale\u201d that stretches from \u201cThriving\u201d to \u201cSinking,\u201d (depicted above).\u00a0 This Scale, developed by #SameHere Global, is based on a science called \u201cPolyvagal,\u201d that explains shifts in the health and balance of our nervous system (the balance between our parasympathetic \u201crest & digest,\u201d and sympathetic \u201cstress,\u201d nervous system responses). It\u2019s a fluid Scale that everyone in the world\u2019s nervous system (and ultimately mental health) lives and moves on, at different points in their lives (or even their days, weeks, months, etc.).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>

Factors that contribute to where one is at on the Scale at any given point in time include: Genetic Predispositions, Life Experiences, Physical Traumas, Environment, and Lifestyle, all of which impact our nervous system\u2019s balance and \u201cpsychological flexibility.\u201d\u00a0 This psychological flexibility means \u2013 the ability to go from a place \u201con the right\u201d of the Scale (more dominant sympathetic responses, like \u201cFluctuating\u201d and \u201cStruggling\u201d), back to places on the left (more dominant parasympathetic responses, like \u201cSurviving,\u201d \u201cGliding,\u201d and \u201cThriving\u201d).\u00a0 So, say you have a traumatic Life Experience, like the loss of a loved one \u2013 it would be expected you would spend some amount of time \u201cto the right\u201d \u2013 \u201cFluctuating, or \u201cStruggling.\u201d\u00a0 But with time and healing, your \u201cpsychological flexibility\u201d allows you to move back \u201cto the left\u201d on this Scale.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
